How a Product Manager uses Workplace to keep her team in the loop

How do we use Workplace to build our own business? We talk to a Product Manager to find out.

As a Product Manager at Facebook, Mariam El Beshlawi connects multiple global teams to set, communicate, and execute strategy.

Using Workplace, Mariam has found ways to overcome the ongoing challenge of business communication with product teams and wider stakeholders. By creating groups and hosting Live video streams she can make sure the right people are always looped in at the right time.

Untangle work with Workplace

From informing everyone about the return to the office to adopting a hybrid way of working, Workplace makes work more simple.

“As a Product Manager, it’s critical that I’m aware of the roadmaps of other teams so we can work together and avoid miscommunication,” Mariam says. “Without Workplace, I just couldn’t see a way of that happening without being on multiple email and distribution channels.”

With an easily accessible directory across Workplace and Facebook, Mariam can effortlessly contact who she wants when she wants.

“We work across many different locations but it doesn't feel like it. It feels like we’re a much smaller team and that’s part of the functionality that we have using Workplace.”

On a day-to-day basis, Mariam works across multiple Workplace groups. From the small internal team group for planning and early iterations of strategy - to wider cross-functional groups where people share developments and listen to feedback.

“We have a secret group where we talk a lot - it’s where I spend the majority of my time, it’s an intimate and safe space for my team.”

“We also have an enterprise, cross-functional open group that anyone can join. We use this to broadcast what we're working on and other teams can give us feedback. It’s the place where they know they can find us."

"It’s the equivalent of going up to someone’s desk - but that someone can be in a completely different country while talking to us. It’s just like being in the same building.”

Communicating with a global team means tackling time-zones and groups allow Product Managers to provide updates and collect feedback without having to filter through less important messages.

"Before Workplace," Mariam says, “I used to wake up to 700 messages from my team. It was hard to figure out if an important feature has just been launched amongst the irrelevant noise.”

“Workplace is like being at the same desk as someone in a completely different country.”

Now with Workplace, Mariam uses Workplace Chat for smaller groups of people and immediate answers, whereas groups allow for ongoing conversations across time-zones. No time is wasted.

For Mariam, one of the quickest and easiest ways to communicate globally through Workplace has been using Live video streams. Her team host fortnightly events where anyone can listen to recent developments and all feedback is welcome.

They’re open-invite events on cross-functional Groups and the feed is shared directly into the group using the growing suite of Workplace integrations.

“Live Streaming means we can share updates in a really informal way. We can hang out with people that want to see what we’ve been working on. It enables people from across the globe to wake up, watch the recording and still ask questions.”

Whether working through time-zones, across Workplace and Facebook teams, or within her own team, Workplace has allowed Product Managers such as Mariam to easily broadcast updates and collate feedback for cohesive global communication.

With huge thanks to Mariam El Beshlawi, Product Manager, Facebook.
